Acrylic Wave Trophy

Presented here as the Microsoft Global Impact Award 2024 awarded to HCLTech, Noida, India, this trophy is fabricated from optical-grade virgin acrylic (PMMA) in a sculpted ocean wave form — a bold, dynamic shape that stands apart from conventional geometric or column-style awards. The Wave Trophy is designed for organisations and events that want their recognition to carry a sense of momentum, impact, and forward motion.

Form and Design

The trophy is shaped as a single breaking wave — a sweeping curved form that rises from a wide, stable base on the left, crests at the top, and curls inward at the tip to complete the wave silhouette. The movement is frozen mid-break, giving the piece a strong sense of energy and direction. Viewed from the front, the wave fills the full width of the trophy, making it a wide, horizontally dominant piece that commands attention on a desk or display shelf in a way that tall vertical trophies do not.

The internal geometry of the wave form is complex — the curve is not uniform but accelerates toward the crest, mimicking the natural physics of a breaking wave. This curvature is only achievable through CNC machining from a solid block; it cannot be replicated accurately through moulding or casting at this level of surface quality. The curled tip at the top of the wave creates a natural overhang that adds a three-dimensional quality to the piece, giving it depth and shadow that changes with the direction and angle of light.

The base is wide, flat, and solid, tapering smoothly into the rising wave form above it. The transition from base to wave is seamless — there is no visible joint, seam, or junction because the entire trophy, base and wave form included, is machined from a single unbroken block of acrylic. This single-piece construction is one of the most immediate markers of quality in an acrylic trophy and ensures there is no risk of delamination, adhesive failure, or misalignment between components over time.

Material

Fabricated from optical-grade virgin PMMA with 92%+ light transmittance, the acrylic body achieves full glass-like transparency throughout. The wave form incorporates a frosted surface treatment on the curved upper sections — the crest, the curl, and the face of the wave — which diffuses light across those areas and gives them a soft, white-silver appearance reminiscent of sea foam and breaking water. This frosting is not applied — it is produced through a controlled surface texturing process during fabrication, making it an integral part of the material surface rather than a coating that can wear or peel.

The lower base section remains in polished clear acrylic, creating a sharp visual contrast between the frosted dynamic wave above and the transparent, grounded base below. This two-tone effect — achieved entirely through material surface treatment rather than colour or pigment — gives the trophy a refined, premium aesthetic that works equally well under warm office lighting and cool daylight.

The refractive index of the PMMA used (~1.49) means that light entering the clear base section bends and travels through the body of the piece before encountering the frosted wave surfaces, where it scatters. This interaction between the clear and frosted zones creates a subtle internal glow effect under directional lighting, making the trophy appear luminous from within.

Engraving

The engraving panel is positioned centrally on the flat lower base section — the widest, most stable, and most clearly visible area of the trophy in its upright display position. The engraving is produced by CO2 laser etching directly into the polished acrylic surface, creating a permanent frosted white impression that contrasts cleanly against the surrounding clear material.

The panel comfortably accommodates a company logo, award name and category, year, recipient organisation name, and location — all at a legible scale with fine-detail precision. As demonstrated on the sample piece, the Microsoft logo mark, award title, year, recipient name, and city are all rendered with consistent frosting depth and sharp edges across the full engraving area. The engraving is permanent, fade-resistant, and requires no protective coating or maintenance.

Symbolism and Use Cases

The wave form carries strong natural associations — momentum, impact, reach, and transformation — making the Wave Trophy particularly well suited to awards centred on innovation, global influence, digital transformation, sustainability, and market leadership. It is equally appropriate for events in the technology, finance, infrastructure, and energy sectors, where the language of scale and forward movement is relevant to the award's intent.

Its wide horizontal footprint also makes it visually distinctive in award displays alongside taller vertical trophies, ensuring it stands out rather than blending into a shelf of similar-looking pieces.

Durability

Impact-resistant and UV-stabilised, the Wave Trophy will not shatter if knocked during handling and will not yellow or craze under prolonged exposure to light. Its single-piece construction eliminates the structural vulnerabilities of assembled or glued multi-part trophies. Safe for standard courier shipping and long-term display without specialist care.
